It’s easy to pull back from the decision to study abroad over the financial costs involved — after all, international students easily pay double to triple the fees domestic students do — but scholarships to study overseas can make your dream a reality.

Here are five scholarships to study in the UK, US or Canada worth exploring this summer:

The Kowitz Scholarship by the University of East Anglia

Do you have a creative flair? Do you enjoy exploring the depths of your imagination to write fiction that captures the heart and soul of your readers? Consider applying for the Kowitz Scholarship, offered by the University of East Anglia (UEA) open to both international and domestic students.

This scholarship provides students such as yourself the chance to pursue a Master of Arts in Creative Writing (Prose Fiction) in the School of Literature, Drama and Creative Writing at UEA. It has an annual value of 10,000 British pounds.

The Kotzen Scholarship by Simmons University

You can pursue a four-year undergraduate programme at Simmons University in Boston, Massachusetts through the Gilbert and Marcia Kotzen Scholars Programme.

Not only does the scholarship waive your tuition as well as room and board fees, but you will also be rewarded with an additional 3,000 US dollars to assist with your academic pursuits, such as study abroad and research support, among others.

To qualify, you must apply as a freshman for the fall semester. Standardised tests are optional — however, if you plan on submitting your test scores, you must have attained a score of 28 or higher on the ACT or 1,300 or higher on the SAT.

If you are a non-native English speaker, you must submit proof of your TOEFL and SAT or ACT score. You must have also achieved at least a 3.3 GPA or higher, unweighted (or the equivalent) in secondary school.

You must demonstrate that you have undergone a college preparatory curriculum which includes an advanced level mathematics course during, or prior to your senior year of high school. Scholarship applicants must also provide a record of taking honours, advanced placement (AP) and international baccalaureate (IB) courses, as available in their secondary school systems.

McCall MacBain Scholarship by McGill University

With the McCall MacBain Scholarship by McGill University, you could be well on your way to studying in Montreal, a lively and diverse French Canadian city.

Ten international candidates will be chosen as McCall MacBain Scholars for September 2023 admission to pursue a full-time master’s or second-entry professional undergraduate program at McGill University.

Besides covering your tuition and other compulsory fees for the normal duration of the master’s or professional programme, you will be provided with a living stipend of 2,000 Canadian dollars per month during the academic terms as well as a relocation grant to Montreal.

The Huckletree Scholarship by Regent’s University London

In partnership with alumna Gabriela Hersham, Regent’s University London will offer one lucky international student (which could be you) the opportunity to bag the Huckletree Scholarship and ICET Bursary to study a BA(Hons) in International Business at the world-class institution.

The scholarship will waive 50% off your tuition fees and provide you with £10,000 per year to cover your living expenses. For details, click here.

The Rhodes Scholarship for West Africa

If you’re a West African student looking for scholarships to study overseas, you may apply to the Rhodes Scholarship. In conjunction with the Oxford-Morland-West Africa Graduate scholarship, there are two scholarships offered each year for West African students from selected countries.

Besides having your tuition costs fully waived, you may also be entitled to a stipend. For the 2021-22 academic year, Rhodes scholars were entitled to a stipend of £17,310 per annum.
