Create and collaborate with Kathrine G. McGovern College of the Arts

The Kathrine G. McGovern College of the Arts at the University of Houston specializes in extraordinary musical, artistic, theatrical and performer-based achievements. The college is a rich composition of forward-thinking creatives, internationally-recognized teachers and 21st century theorists. It offers an array of leading programs, including Bachelors, Masters, and Doctoral degrees, supplying a creative space that nurtures artists as individuals.

Ranked one of the leading centers for ethnic diversity in the US, the University of Houston – home to the prestigious College of the Arts – has received the Higher Education Excellence in Diversity award (HEED) for the second consecutive year. To win the HEED award, institutions must demonstrate clear campus inclusion and initiate student outreach programs. Colleges and educational institutions awarded a HEED are praised for showcasing excellent students and nurturing future leaders of society. With the help of the Kathrine G. McGovern College of the Arts (KGMCA), the university provides today’s global workforce with astounding talent. It’s no surprise that the college already has 150+ faculty members and over 1,500 students to its name.

KGMCA students are drawn to the bustling rhythm of Houston. According to the Los Angeles Times, Houston has fast-become the most diverse city in the US. An influx of students from around the world has made the city a warm and hospitable place to live. Complete with hipster hotspots and a wealth of trendy neighborhoods, you can explore places such as River Oaks and Montrose, or even utilize a student membership to the Museum of Fine Arts Houston – host to many renowned art exhibits each year. You’ll also be close to The Houston Symphony orchestra events and the remarkable Houston Grand Opera.

School of Art

By allowing students to find their own artistic voices, the University of Houston’s School of Art is fixated on individual growth rather than falling into the trap of generalization. It’s an institution that sees the student as the most stable component of the program, and without its full commitment, activity would lack depth and knowledge.

The school has a range of undergraduate and graduate courses on offer. Why not dive straight into a BFA in Sculpture or an MFA in Studio Art? The BFA in Graphic Design program in particular sparks interest due to hands-on design classes, as well as the opportunity to enroll in a valuable scholarship scheme supported by the UHGAP. At this art school, the future is your canvas.

Or, if you’d rather join the next generation of arts and entertainment leaders, the newly-established Master of Arts program in Arts Leadership might appeal to you. This one-of-a-kind program is a prime launch-pad for tomorrow’s leading influencers. Just as Briana Gonzalez (MA Arts Leadership ’17) states, “This program was exciting because so many things seemed possible. I was able to completely tailor it to my interests, I love it here!”

Moores School of Music

As a self-sufficient institute with its very own Opera House, the Moores School of Music outperforms its competition and hosts hundreds of visitors each year. Unveiled in 1997, the 800-seat, acoustically-perfect space consists of a flexibly-sized orchestra shell and sweeping murals of vibrant colors, designed by the famous abstract artist Frank Stella. It’s the ideal space for choral groups, wind ensembles, and young artists of the Moores community to perform.

Not only is there a diverse cohort of applicants at the Moores School, there’s also a varied range of degree plans from which students can choose. One such course is the Bachelor of Music in Applied Music, where those beginning their collegiate careers can study performance pedagogy, music history, and gain in-depth performance practice through a range of opportunities.

If you wish to further your academic studies at the graduate level, the Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts programs are an option, as well as the Certificate in Music Performance. For admission to the Moores School of Music, the postgraduate process is more rigorous than undergraduate entry requirements. All Doctoral and Master’s students must audition before a faculty committee and complete the required examinations. Above all else, Moores educates future generations of musicians with qualifications that are well-regarded throughout the music world.

School of Theatre & Dance

Houston’s School of Theatre & Dance delivers a variety of dance concerts, studio productions and plays for students to engage with.  What’s interesting about this undergraduate curriculum is that it requires students to take on a range of contemporary courses – including scenic technology and the fundamentals of theatre.

BFA degrees on offer here have been specifically-designed to boost your natural talents and shed light on new skills required for career progression. The BFA Acting program enables you to explore multiple aspects of the subject before applying them on stage. For those who are motivated to continue their studies at the KGMCA campus, there are also multiple MFA avenues for you to try out.

It’s the affordability of the School of Theatre and Dance, in combination with the rigorous academic programs, that places students at the forefront of theatrical education and dance performance – especially since its Community Outreach festivals and tours are known to be outstanding and exciting.
