Boosting employability with Federation University Australia

Federation University Australia prides itself on its high quality, modern vocational and higher education offerings, presented across a national and international campus network.

With a history that dates back to 1870, Federation University Australia (FedUni) is the third-oldest higher education provider in the country. Its newest campus is based within the booming city of Brisbane, which ranks among the top lifestyle cities in the world.

Brisbane enjoys an impressive 283 days of sunshine each year, while the low cost of living and feel-good culture makes it the perfect location to live, work and study. Some 75,000 international students now choose Brisbane as their learning destination each year.

Employability is of paramount importance to FedUni, which has an exemplary record for teaching quality and graduate employment. The University is ranked number one in Australia for Teaching Quality and Graduate Employability Skills, according to the latest Student and Employer Satisfaction surveys from the Australian Federal Government, and also boasts a five-star rating from the Australian Good Universities Guide for Social Equity and Student Support.

The Brisbane campus offers a range of programs in business, commerce and information technology which boast some excellent opportunities to connect with industry through a range of corporate partnerships.

A great example is their relationship with innovation powerhouse River City Labs (RCL). Owned by the Australia Computing Society (ACS), the professional association for Australia’s ICT sector, RCL supports start-ups and tech entrepreneurs while working with FedUni to provide incredible professional experience and networking opportunities for the student body.

In the new Bachelor of Business (Entrepreneurship), students are able to undertake work integrated learning projects with start-ups gaining employability skills in a thriving entrepreneurial space. CEO, River City Labs, Peta Ellis is excited by the collaboration stating, “It is so very encouraging to see how Federation University is looking at the future of Business and Entrepreneurship and their keen interest in partnering with industry to deliver such important content and workplace immersion.”

Technology programs such as the Master of Technology (Enterprise Systems & Business Analytics), offer students access to software tools and datasets from luminaries such as SAP University Alliance, IBM Academic Initiative and Teradata University Network. A key feature of the postgraduate IT programs is the innovative Masters Project providing the opportunity for students to work intensively on real life business problems for startups at RCL. During study students have direct access to the RCL community, RCL mentors and work space. These opportunities are building the skills and networks students will need beyond graduation.

Amandeep Singh, a FedUni student, says: “I am working with my teammates, Anchal and Avantika to develop a web portal for Enkidu – an online legal-tech solution for contracts. I’m very excited to apply my software development skills in a practical setting, knowing it will be very helpful for my future career.

“Working out of both the uni and River City Labs means we have access to the latest software and technical experts. I’ve already learnt a lot from them and hope to put the knowledge into practice when we get a job in industry.”

Federation University makes full use of Brisbane and its thriving industries through an extensive network of partnerships with the city’s leading businesses. The university connects students to partners through an industry-integrated learning program. Other leading local industry partners include Navitas and Concentrix.

Launched in 2017, the collaboration with global business services provider Concentrix offers students access to real-world job recruitment processes. Here, students are helped with building their job applications and recruitment skills, while gaining constructive feedback on where to improve and how to forge their path in the business world.

Anchal Gulati, a Master of Technology (Enterprise Systems and Business Analytics) student from the Brisbane campus, has been offered employment upon completion of her placement at Concentrix.

She spoke highly of her experience, saying that, “This extensive training has given me so much new knowledge, while developing my theoretical and practical understanding of the technology. I am so happy to have been given a part-time job with Concentrix at the end of my training. The best part is, I can work with them in Brisbane or in India if I move home after graduation.”

The campus is committed to students beyond graduation and offers each learner a free 16-week internship through its Graduate Professional Internship program. The aim of the program is to launch students’ careers with online work readiness workshops to improve employability prospects.

Internship placements are matched specifically to each student’s professional background and future career goals. The program is designed to help graduates understand how the Australian workplace operates, giving them the chance to enter industry with confidence.

There is also a scholarship for students wishing to undertake the Professional Year program including the Australian Computer Society (ACS) Professional Year Program and the Accounting Professional Year Program nationwide.

Being based in Brisbane also gives students an advantage in the hunt for graduate employment. Ranked higher than Sydney, Melbourne and Perth, this city is Australia’s fastest-growing capital for employment. Job market growth continues to outstrip the rate of population increase by two to one, now accounting for 47 percent of Queensland’s total job growth. Nicknamed Australia’s gateway to Asia, Brisbane’s strong business links and networks ensure a plethora of global opportunity of university graduates.

With so much to offer, FedUni Brisbane has the resources and connections needed to prepare students as they transition from higher education to the global workplace.
