Future-proof your career with a graduate computer science degree from Baylor University

While searching for a computer science graduate degree that would drive his career further in today’s digital age, Arun Sanjel discovered Baylor University’s Department of Computer Science in Texas, US.

The 25-year-old student from Nepal knew that he wanted to place his professional development in the hands of a faculty who conducted real-world research projects and cared for the progress of their students.

He found all this and more at Baylor University.

“Baylor is a great research college.  Even for my masters, I have to do research or a project to graduate. This small but well-known faculty is an attractive point of Baylor, and the faculty and research opportunities led me to start a degree here,” Arun said. He works with Dr Greg Speegle for his master’s research on generating parallel programs from sequential programs.

Graduate degrees for the digital age

Baylor University offers the Master’s, Online Master’s and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Computer Science. Students benefit from small and focused programmes, where they get the time, attention, resources, support, and opportunities to launch themselves as computer science professionals.

Most importantly, computer science graduate programmes at Baylor prioritise practical exposure and experience.

For example, Sarjan Kabir from Bangladesh is gaining experience as a full-stack software developer for the International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) Headquarters at Baylor. “It gives me the opportunity to work in an industry-level, large-scale software development team, which will help me strengthen my skills as I go forward on this career path,” she said.

If you want to get into research in academia or industry, the PhD in Computer Science programme is the right pick. For one, you will be guided by inspiring faculty mentors.

What is more, you will have access to full tuition support, subsidised health insurance, and a multi-year stipend assistantship by working as teaching assistants, research assistants, or developers for the ICPC projects.

A faculty at the forefront of research and innovation

According to student Vincent Bushong from the US, the professors at Baylor guide the way with excellent resources and incisive input built upon years of experience.

“I’ve found that getting plugged into existing projects that professors and other students are passionate about makes the transition to a research environment easier,” Bushong shared.

Each faculty member is dedicated to developing respectable bodies of research within their areas of speciality, driving an innovative mindset that is infectious to graduate students. For example, Vincent worked on microservices in the lab of software engineering expert Dr Tomas Cerny.

Dr Cerny studies aspect-oriented programming within cloud-based microservices and the Internet of Things. His work is important for information technology companies, filling the gap between developer and sysops in large industry settings.

Then there’s Dr Greg Hamerly, whose expertise is in machine learning and competitive learning. He makes waves in the development and application of algorithms. Dr Erich Baker has published numerous papers on bioinformatics, drawing from a rich background in systems biology and data management.

Dr G. Michael Poor focuses his skills and knowledge to discovering innovations in human-computer interaction. Dr Jeff Donahoo, whose expertise is in cybersecurity & networking, leads the ICPC development and cyber defense teams at Baylor.

Build your computer science expertise at Baylor University

There are many opportunities to grow professionally at Baylor University.

“There are opportunities to conduct research in computer code analysis, publish academic papers, attend research competitions within the university, and collaborate on projects funded by the National Science Foundation or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,” said graduate student Jan Svacina from the Czech Republic.

Master’s in Computer Science graduate Darren Guinness is currently pursuing his PhD at the University of Colorado Boulder. He says his time at Baylor helped him prepare for the PhD programme as he passed several “tougher classes” while balancing research.

“My time as a research assistant under Dr Poor helped me understand the research process from start to finish and helped me learn how to write technical documents and present in public venues,” said Guinness.

“The small department affords a very unique experience which fosters growth and provides support and connections throughout your time at Baylor.”

As for Sanjel, his time at Baylor will always be immensely memorable.

“Baylor is a really beautiful college with lots of student activities happening throughout the year. My personal favourite is the Student Life Center and Marina,” he reminisced.

“Being an international student, Baylor’s welcoming and embracing culture really helped me settle and thrive.”
