Create new technologies, revive traditional industries, conserve the world’s natural resources, inform public policy — at UVM Graduate College, the possibilities are limitless.

Established in 1952, the Graduate College at the University of Vermont (UVM) is known as an institution that cultivates academic excellence of the highest caliber. It’s driven by a mission to create and discover knowledge in service of the public good, and certainly lives up to this through robust interdisciplinary programmes that cut across several areas of study.

Its secret? Playing on the strengths of its impressive host of professors and teaching staff. Every member of UVM’s faculty is carefully considered for their level of experience and expertise, resulting in a collection of the most lively and rigorous minds of several generations. They come from some of the top universities in the world, including Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Harvard University, and University College London. Learning is supported by UVM’s collection of world-class facilities. There are two main libraries — Howe, the main campus library, and Dana, the medical library. The university is also host to a number of specialised facilities, including: a STEM complex; an on-campus medical centre; 10 natural areas, including Mt. Mansfield summit; a horse farm; and research farms supporting animal and dairy science, horticulture, and maple research. The College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences (CEMS) is also home to one of the nation’s 100 fastest supercomputers.

There is no question that UVM is a champion of inclusivity and diversity. Throughout history, it has shaped the narrative of what it means to give every student an equal chance at a top-quality education. It was the first institution of higher education to declare public support for freedom of religion, and the first university to admit women and African-Americans into Phi Beta Kappa honour society.

At UVM, students are guaranteed the support and guidance they need to become well-rounded, empathetic, and intelligent global citizens. Combined, it’s the perfect formula for students to thrive in the next stage of their lives.

The University of Vermont is the fifth-oldest university in New England, coming after Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth and Brown. It’s located in Burlington, a city known for its rising technology and innovation hub. It’s been referred to as “Silicon Valley in Vermont” by The Atlantic and among the top 10 tech hubs by Forbes, making it an ideal study destination for ambitious students the world over.

Its establishment in 1791 has given UVM the time and expertise to develop a range of programmes that are designed to challenge and explore every student’s realm of knowledge. Over 100 bachelor’s programmes are available for students to choose from, with 36 accelerated masters programmes. The best part? It’s a large enough university to offer a breadth of ideas, resources and opportunities, but small enough to enable close faculty-student mentorship across all levels of study.

Hear from the students

At UVM, the next stage of a student’s journey is integrated directly into every curriculum. Ninety-two percent of seniors are involved in research, an internship, or other experience-based learning or high impact practice — 40% of these engage with faculty members on conducting research, and 44% have taken at least one service-learning class whilst at UVM.

The university’s Career Centre is designed to aid students in the journey of navigating through their future careers. Students can partake in interest groups to gain access to invaluable resources, build their skills through experiential learning opportunities or attend one of the many career fairs. The centre also lists over 10,000 internships to help students enhance their skillset to future employers.

Supportive career guidance

A dynamic study destination

Outside of classes, students are treated to a college town that’s consistently ranked as one of — if not the — best in the country. Princeton Review has named UVM among the nation’s top 387 colleges, listing it amongst the “Most Loved Colleges” and “Great College City” categories. It’s got a thriving food and music scene and great access to nature and recreation. Excitingly, the Burlington region has some of the best skiing slopes in the northeast; students are at minimum 25 minutes away from ski resorts including Bolton Valley, Mad River Glen, and Stowe.

That’s not to distract from the university’s bustling campus. It’s within walking distance (1.6 kilometres) of Lake Champlain, a stunning lake with 587 miles of shoreline and an eight-mile paved trail running across it. Join one of over 250 clubs and societies or attend student-exclusive shows of the hottest visiting artists. At UVM, there’s always something going on.
