Shape the future of dance at NSCD

Font

The Northern School of Contemporary Dance (NSCD) stands out for many reasons. It’s a leading centre for contemporary dance in the UK and the only institution to offer conservatoire-level professional dance training in the North of England. These are just some of its hallmarks of success.

NSCD has been delivering specialist conservatoire-level training for over 30 years. It’s no surprise why their innovative curricula and inspirational teaching have attracted a diverse cohort of talented and creative students from all corners of the globe, bolstering the school’s reputation. Some 30% of their students come from outside the UK, representing over 30 different nationalities.

Since its inception in 1985, NSCD has flexed and moved with the times. At the core of the school’s ethos is a focus on the individual, and a desire to drive the art form forward, working directly with those already in the field. This prepares talented young dancers for varied and meaningful careers — with an international mix of professional companies or as artists in their own right upon graduation.

Stellar programmes for aspiring dance professionals

Hear from the students

Leeds is a beautiful city with a rich history, but is also a dynamic and fresh place to be. During my three years of study, I went on a journey of self-discovery, learning to think independently and find my own unique style. Since graduation, I have continued to explore my interest in dance theatre, improvisation and physical theatre. Studying at NSCD changed the way I see the world — I became more positive and learned to live in the moment.

Pianpian Li, 2016 BA graduate

NSCD’s staff are sophisticated dancers, producers, or choreographers who have been working in the industry for years. They have plenty of real-world experience and connections to the industry. They can tell you what are some of the common problems that you will likely face in the industry, and teach you how to deal with them. Everything we do in class can be directly applied to our future work in the industry. The openness of the school’s system gives us plenty of freedom to create and take risks with our own artistic development. If we have any problems there is always someone to ask for help.

Nga Man Cheang, MA Dance & Creative Enterprise student 2019-20

NSCD gives you so many opportunities to express your creativity. Never think you aren’t creative enough because you are always an inspiration to someone in the room. The course is intensive but very fun, so be ready to sweat and have the best memories of your life!

NSCD is one of the best places for aspiring dance artists. The institution is set in the vibrant, student-friendly city of Leeds —the UK’s richest dance ecology outside the capital. This creative hub was also voted the Best UK Student City by The Independent in 2016 and the fifth Best European Destination by Lonely Planet (2017). The school is home to over 200 students from over 25 countries. NSCD focuses on nurturing individuality, helping students to achieve their dream career, be it as a performer, creator, teacher, or producer.
