Bani Singh isn’t your typical engineering graduate. Her interest in the arts and sciences serves as a juxtaposition of her creative and logical flair. The 23-year-old international student in Canada is also a YouTuber who loves shooting and editing videos, whether it involves documenting her life as a postgraduate business school student in Toronto to sharing information about documents international students need for a study permit.

When she isn’t flexing her creative muscles, the Indian national is busy attending classes for her Master of Management programme at the Schulich School of Business at York University.

Study International caught up with Singh to find out more about her life as an international student in Canada:

Tell us about yourself. Why did you choose to study abroad?

I am an engineering graduate and a video creator on YouTube. I love cooking and reading books.

Studying at one of the top universities in the world was my childhood dream. I wanted to study in a different setting so that I could learn to see things differently and get to study with people from different countries.

Why did you choose to study in Toronto, Canada? What do you like most about studying here?

I shortlisted Canada because it is immigration-friendly. Toronto, specifically, because many companies have their offices here, and hence, it would be easy to network with people.

What are you studying and why?

I am studying for a Master of Management. During my undergrad, I took part in a lot of extracurricular activities and found my love for management. Also, it would add to the tech skills that I got from my engineering degree.

Tell us about your most memorable time at the Schulich School of Business?

I got to meet people from different countries and learn about their culture. I made a few good friends at Schulich.

Was there anything about Toronto that surprised you as an international student in Canada?

Pedestrians are god on streets! Cars wait until you cross the street. This was such a different experience as I was not used to cars waiting for me until I cross the road. I still stop out of habit!

What are your top recommendations or advice to others who are planning to study in Toronto, Ontario?

Be mentally prepared if you want to study abroad. You are going to be on your own if you do not have any family or friends there.

The summers here are lovely, so make sure you get the best out of it!

What are your plans for the future?

After I graduate, I want to go into consulting and also focus on growing my YouTube channel Bani Abroad. The channel is for all those people who want to study and settle abroad. Past COVID-19, I want to travel to different countries and explore different cultures!
