Elon Musk is at the helm of one of the biggest names in the auto industry, and there’s a chance for you to bag a coveted internship with Tesla if you have the right skills and interests.

The electric US car company has come a long way since it was founded by Silicon Valley entrepreneurs Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning in 2003. According to reports, Musk replaced Eberhard in 2008 to become chief executive.

Back in 2020, Tesla was worth as much as the combined market cap of nine of the world’s largest automakers. Last year, they sold nearly one million cars, up 87% from its 2020 sales.

With an internship at Tesla, you could experience the magic that drives the success of the company. They recently opened up summer internship applications for qualified science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) students.

Availability

According to Tesla’s website, you can apply for an internship at Tesla offices in the US, Canada, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region. An internship at Tesla could last anywhere between three to 12 months in North America.

Compensation

Tesla pays their interns significantly higher than many other companies. According to Glassdoor, the base pay of a Tesla intern is 47,837 US dollars annually, with the opportunity to reap additional incentives worth US$22,255. This could bring your annual potential earnings to US$70,091.

Benefits

You’ll enjoy multiple benefits by doing an internship at Tesla, which could include one-on-one mentorship, comprehensive healthcare, transportation support, the ability to participate in an employee stock purchase programme (depending on eligibility), discounted merchandise, fitness programmes and more.

If you live further than 50 miles away from your designated Tesla work site, you will be entitled to a relocation stipend. Tesla also offers housing for selected interns at Gigafactory Nevada.

On top of that, training and mentorship will be provided to get you up to speed, so that you will be able to align yourself to the standards and work ethic expected of a full-time worker at Tesla. Many interns at Tesla end up being hired as full-time workers.

Eligibility requirements

  • You must be enrolled in an undergraduate or master’s programme, or currently pursuing advanced studies
  • You must be in good standing for your enrolled programme
  • You may be considered if you are a military veteran within one year of discharge
  • You must demonstrate good technical skills
