As a World Top 30 university for the Arts and Humanities, Durham University understands the value of research-led education and effectively equips students with the skills they need for future studies and to excel in the workplace.

Through Durham’s extensive range of single, joint and combined honours programmes, you have the choice to defy academic boundaries and take your knowledge of the arts and humanities much further than expected.

Classics & Ancient History

Ranked joint second in the UK in the REF2014 evaluation of research quality and third in the 2017 Guardian University League Tables in terms of student satisfaction, the Department of Classics and Ancient History at Durham is flourishing.

For undergraduate study, you can direct your interests of Greek and Roman history towards the BA Ancient History degree. Or, if you’d prefer a mix of modern and traditional, you may wish to choose a combined honours course with the BA Ancient, Medieval and Modern History.

Alternatively, for postgraduate learners, you can expand your expertise with the MA in Greece, Rome and the Near East or the MA in Ancient Philosophy. Also, there’s a core MA in Classics programme open to applications.

English Studies

In the Complete University Guide 2018, Durham’s English Studies department secured first place for the 6th year in the row. With research that makes a national and international impact, you’ll be working alongside a forward-thinking A&H faculty.

To kickstart your learning, you can opt for a BA English Literature course or merge it with history and philosophy. And to progress further, there are myriad Master’s programmes you can apply for, including the MA in Romantic and Victorian Literary Studies.

During your study abroad experience, you may also want to take some time out for yourself and relax by reading and writing via the Centre for Poetry and Poetics and the annual Durham Book Festival.

Modern Languages & Cultures

If you want to master the art of modern languages, delve into a department that considers a variety of cultures such as Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Russian, Japanese, Hispanic and Italian studies.

With over 80 full-time staff members teaching subjects such as visual culture, literature, translation and cultural history, it’s no surprise that this leading department of languages at Durham features in The Complete University Guide 2018 for its leading degrees in French and Italian studies.

Or if you want a broad degree that spans four years and includes an incredible study abroad scheme, the BA Modern Languages and Cultures course is the ideal choice. And for advanced learners, there’s also the MA in Languages, Literatures and Cultures.

History

Are you captivated by the discovery of past events? Do you often wonder about the birth of western society and the global impact of modern history?  If yes, then a BA in History or a BA in Modern European Languages and History with a Year Abroad could be great for you.

And if you’re already a master of social and economic history, you may want to boost your skills with a postgraduate taught course or a doctoral research project.

Durham University understands that history students engage with matters of the past, but also want them to be prepared for the future. That’s why this department keeps your academic portfolio up-to-date and exposes you to a range of engaging opportunities and events.

Theology & Religion

Immersed in the fields of Christian theology, Biblical studies and the sociological and the anthropological study of religion, students at the Durham T&R department have been graduating with confidence since 1832.

By featuring undergraduate programmes such as the BA in Theory and Religion and the BA in Philosophy and Theology, you’ll be working directly with experienced professors and will obtain an authentic appreciation for complex, inspiring texts.

For an advanced approach, postgraduates can study a selection of research programmes like the Doctor of Theology and Ministry (DThM) and the Integrated PhD scheme. Paired with plenty of professional development opportunities, you’ll be able to challenge yourself through extracurricular seminars and postgraduate training modules.

Music

As the Top UK music department for two years running in The Complete University Guide (2018 and 2019) and The Sunday Times University League Table (2017 and 2018), it’s worth pursuing your musical studies here, at Durham.

To support your intellectual growth, this music department also provides a range of postgraduate pathways. You could even specialise in British music and Music Psychology.

Philosophy

Through studying the BA Philosophy degree and other undergraduate courses,  you’ll learn from a syllabus that’s truly rich with content. And with its inclusive community of postgraduate researchers, you’ll be steered through your PhD degree with your peers by your side.

With research-led departments such as this, you’ll challenge boundaries and design your professional future. And as the Durham philosophy states, “In an environment of educational excellence and intellectual curiosity, you’ll be inspired to reach your potential.”
