Louisiana State University: Where Dynamic Computer Scientists are Made

The road to becoming a world-class computer scientist often begins with an acclaimed education. To find one, look no further than Louisiana State University (LSU). This institution is home to a robust Division of Computer Science and Engineering that has the graduate offerings that lead to success.

Keen on fast-tracking a lucrative, high-tech career with a certificate? Looking to advance your existing skillsets with a master’s degree? Ready to fulfil your doctoral dreams? It can all be done here.

Accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET, the division understands the importance of diverse, accessible pathways into what is becoming one of the fastest-growing academic disciplines of our time. Its growth is a result of the strong demand for professionals that is only getting stronger. The division offers multiple specialization/concentration options, including cybersecurity, data science, cloud computing,  and software engineering in its BS degree in Computer Science. According to the US Bureau of Labour Statistics (BLS), employment in computer and information technology occupations is projected to grow faster than the average for all occupations, at 13% from 2020 to 2030 and adding about 667,600 new jobs . LSU is ready to fill the gap.

The division’s MS degree in Computer Science (MCSC) is designed to prepare students for computer science-oriented careers and is also an ideal stepping-stone into a PhD. The curriculum covers the core topics of theory, algorithms, operating systems, programming languages, computer graphics and vision, databases and analytics, deep learning, artificial intelligence, and software development.

Of course, opportunities for customisation abound. LSU Computer Science and Engineering offers three MS concentrations: core computer science, computational science, and systems science. Every student gets to choose one path that will eventually culminate in either a thesis or project. Students are also free to explore beyond their curriculum by looking into applied or interdisciplinary courses that can further prepare them for their specific goals. All routes ultimately lead to a rigorous understanding of computer science.

Upon completion, graduates boast the training and research skills required to apply knowledge in new and innovative ways. Those interested in research careers in universities or industrial laboratories could opt to pursue LSU’s PhD degree in Computer Science (PCSC). Its advanced curriculum covers several areas related to theoretical foundations, systems and architecture, databases and data analytics, software, computational science, and digital media.

Every program at the LSU Division of Computer Science and Engineering is delivered by a dynamic, world-class group of educators. They take guidance from an Industry Advisory Council composed of accomplished professionals from companies such as IBM, Chevron, and Electronic Arts who volunteer to support the educational mission and goals of the Division. In recent years, experts in emerging areas such as cloud computing, big data, computer vision, cybersecurity and more have joined the faculty to maintain the program’s competitive edge.

Recently the faculty brainstormed a brand new graduate certificate program to ensure more individuals will be equipped to join the growing number of companies that place greater emphasis on cloud computing (67% of all enterprise infrastructure will be cloud-based by the end of 2021). The Online Graduate Certificate in Cloud Computing and Machine Learning teaches the arts of mastering cloud computing frameworks, cloud infrastructures, and blockchain applications. With the program serving as one golden ticket into several industries, it also emphasises the importance of project management — a competency growing in importance among some of the most sought-after technical jobs in the industry. The best part? Its flexible format enables upskillers and reskillers to participate from anywhere in the world. One year is all it takes to gain the skills today’s employers are willing to pay top dollar for.

Graduates will qualify for in-demand roles such as software engineer, full-stack architect, network administrator, cloud engineer, cloud architect, data analyst, security specialist, and java developer.

Measuring up has never been easier, thanks to LSU’s affordability. In 2019 it was rated best value university in Louisiana in  Forbes 2019 America’s Best Value Colleges rankings. Today, the university continues to offer financial aid in abundance. In fact, students admitted to the Division of Computer Science and Engineering will be automatically considered for financial assistance.
