New Mexico Military Institute: Great value education at a leading US boarding school

The first step in success in life is the recognition that true achievement flows through duty and honor. The challenges we face from day to day are countless in scope, variety and complexity. The world is constantly changing and the solutions of yesteryear no longer suffice.

Ultimately, there is no substitute to the disciplined application of knowledge and skills if you want to make your mark in this world. But it takes a well-rounded individual, packed with the right leadership skills and discipline, to deal with this challenge and effect meaningful changes both for personal as well as societal success.

This, then, is the impetus behind military schools – the idea that you could combine the finest traditions of the military and world-class academics to produce an individual far more equipped for the world and far more confident than their peers. Gone are the old stereotypes about military schools – previously deemed reform centers for troubled youth, and stodgy places where heavy-handed discipline hindered creativity and personal growth.

Dependable and well-rounded graduates

Today, industry and academia look to military-oriented schools for their innovative and well-rounded learning as well as their rigorous application of standards. This produces dependable graduates who can approach problems from multiple angles and deliver consistent results regardless of pressures.

For that reason, among many others, these graduates are well sought after by industry – from the boardrooms of multinational corporations, to courtrooms and hospitals, to even bustling state-of-the-art laboratories. As per their military outlook, they are not content to only follow, but to lead and to assume responsibility, and to chart their own destiny.

And that’s why so many flock to the New Mexico Military Institute (NMMI). Located in Roswell, New Mexico and founded in 1891, proudly bears the motto “Duty, Honor, and Achievement.” The school features a program of strong, challenging academics as well as leadership and character development. Merging the best of the military tradition and best of the academia, students will be given both the drive and the space to grow both personally and professionally.

Academic prowess

NMMI is the only state-supported, co-educational college preparatory high school and junior college in the United States, allowing high school learners to transition seamlessly into the first two years of college. That makes it a fantastic and inspirational starting point for youth looking to make a strong and decisive start to their adulthood.

NMMI understands how important head starts can be, which is why its curriculum and teaching approach is designed to help students be their very best. And that has paid off handsomely – its high school students consistently score above the average state and national scores for ACT tests. Ninety-five percent of NMMI graduates go on to complete four-year degrees at top-tier U.S. universities such as Penn State, Stanford, Rice, Cornell, University of Texas, Arizona State University, University of Colorado, and the nation’s Service Academies.

A key cornerstone of NMMI’s academic prowess is its small class sizes and low student-to-teacher ratio. There are 16 students for every faculty member at NMMI, allowing students to interact closely with academic staff and to receive the academic attention that they need.

The tenured members of NMMI’s faculty are well-qualified – holding Ph.D.s and Master’s degrees and renowned for their teaching excellence. And if a student requires further help, he or she can turn to an academic advisor who monitors their progress, helps them get the most out of their educational experience, and aids in their application to a college or university of their choice.

Flexible and relevant

While known to be a military school, only a small percentage of NMMI graduates – roughly 15 percent – go on to a career in the military. The rest go on to make waves in the fields of business, industry, public service, education, and more. An NMMI education is flexible, and relevant to the needs of employers as well as graduates.

Students are exposed to a diverse student community drawn from 44 U.S. states and 16 countries around the world – the state of New Mexico itself is one of the most diverse in the U.S. Besides having the opportunity to learn from different cultures and experience live in America, international students have access to an impressive array of sporting facilities, ranging from spacious basketball courts and swimming pools to baseball fields and tennis courts.

Great value

One of NMMI’s undisputed strengths is its value for money. Tuition fees are highly affordable across the board, especially when compared to other boarding schools in major cities or junior colleges. Boarding School Review named NMMI as the sixth least expensive boarding school (tuition-wise). And even then, a vast majority of NMMI students receive some sort of financial aid or another, further reducing their overall costs.

During a student’s time at NMMI the value of their education will total around US$38,000, however the actual cost is discounted to approximately US$21,000. The school does its best to ensure that all who wish to study on its premises have the opportunity to do so, regardless of their financial ability.
