Saint Louis University Master of Public Health (MPH): Elevate your public health career

When it comes to pursuing a graduate degree in public health, choosing the right university can make all the difference in your future career. Saint Louis University’s College for Public Health and Social Justice (CPHSJ) stands out among the best in the United States, offering an exceptional educational experience and unparalleled outcomes.

The college is focused on what students gain from being part of an outstanding academic institution. SLU’s CPHSJ is on a mission to pursue health, well-being, and social justice for and with communities. Led by nationally renowned professors and researchers, students apply their knowledge in practical settings and form authentic partnerships inspired by SLU’s Jesuit tradition and identity. The college is also ranked among the top 25% in the country by US News & World Report and is accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health – the field’s highest accreditation.

As one of the world’s leading Jesuit universities, SLU emphasizes integrity, ethics, and service-oriented leadership. When you leave SLU, you carry with you not just a degree but a commitment to making a positive impact on public health.

One such transformative programme that SLU offers is the Master of Public Health (MPH) — one of the oldest and largest programmes in the U.S. Midwest. SLU is a place where you can learn the methods and processes around specific content areas that help you build a path for yourself in public health* that serves the greater good of the community.

Both MPH and certificate classes are small. This intimate learning environment lets you interact more with professors and peers. Nearly half of MPH students collaborate with faculty and community partners on various research projects, too. Not only does this research provide students with valuable volunteer opportunities, but it offers students real-world experiences they can highlight as they begin interviewing for internships and jobs during their second year in the programme.

Such hands-on involvement is crucial in preparing students for a successful public health career. That’s why all MPH students complete a 320-hour Applied Practice Experience (APEX) related to their concentration after their first year in the programme. Students work with the MPH internship coordinator and their faculty advisor to secure an appropriate internship — in the city, nationally, or across the globe — that’s aligned with their interests and career goals. For example, previous Behavioural Science and Health Education students have interned at the likes of the American Diabetes Association, March of Dimes Missouri Chapter, Patient Centered Outcome Research Institute (PCORI), St. Louis Area Foodbank and the St. Louis Area Business Health Coalition.

This list is just a sampling of the college’s vast network of industry partners. SLU’s location in St. Louis allows for countless opportunities as the area is home to many health systems, departments of health, and organisations dedicated to public health. For instance, BJC HealthCare , SSM Health, and Mercy offer highly competitive internships and ample opportunities for graduates to grow their careers after graduating from SLU. Whatever your aspirations, you’ll have the guidance of a dedicated student success team to help you realise them.

With such features, it’s easy to see how 90% of SLU’s MPH graduates pass the Certification in Public Health Exam on their first attempt — well above the national average. What’s more, an impressive 95% of MPH graduates secure jobs within 90 days of graduation or choose to pursue additional advanced degrees, such as Ph.D.s or M.D.s.

The best part? St. Louis is one of the most affordable metropolitan areas in the United States. The cost of living, including apartment leases, is lower compared to major U.S. East and West Coast cities and Chicago. You can save money on living expenses, while receiving a world-class education.
