UC Berkeley Extension: Short-term programs with long-term impact

Short-term programs with a long-lasting effect on your career success are in high demand at this continuing education branch of the University of California, Berkeley.

Known to national and international students as UC Berkeley Extension, the school’s selection of short-term programs provides learners with opportunities to prepare for university study in the United States, or expand their career knowledge while immersing themselves in the incredible San Francisco Bay Area, home to Silicon Valley.

Students are attracted to the intellectual and academic quality received from UC Berkeley. The top-ranking public university worldwide has faculty and alumni who have won 107 Nobel Prizes, 36 in Science and Economics since 2000, which is a third behind Harvard and Cambridge universities. Faculty and alumni have also received 14 Field’s Medals for Math, 25 Turing Awards for Computing, 20 Oscars for film-making and 117 Olympic Gold Medals.

UC Berkeley’s global reputation reaches far into Silicon Valley and across the globe and students achieve professional success after completing one of the many study-abroad programs.

After completing the UC Berkeley Extension semester-long study, Marcos Bento successfully started work as a corporate strategy analyst at EDP, a global renewable-energy company.

“The time spent at UC Berkeley Extension was the time of my life, not only because of the classes and instructors, but also because of the atmosphere of the city and the Bay Area, as well as meeting friends who share the same values and personal and professional goals,” Bento explains.

Practical in nature, the programs are designed for applicants who are currently working or are ready to enter the workforce. Providing real-world technical skills and insightful working opportunities, you can select a program that suits your career direction and effectively shapes your success.

For the UX/UI Design subject area, you can take a UX (User-Experience) Design Immersive, a UI (User-Interface) Design Immersive or the Professional Diploma Program route to expand your knowledge of app design, visibility and customer engagement.

Through the Corporate Finance and Financial Analytics selection of short-term options, you can learn how finance connects corporations to the economy and consumers, and how to use financial analytics to optimize business operations, transactions and corporate strategies.

Alternatively, by researching into the Data Science subject area, you’ll discover how UC Berkeley Extension grants you the skills to collect, process, analyze and interpret data to guide business strategies and decisions through their one-semester Immersives, leading to a full diploma.

How does it work?

If you opt for a one-semester Project Management Immersive or the one-semester Advanced Project Management Immersive, you’ll adopt the core skills as outlined by the industry-standard Project Management Body of Knowledge® and receive a certificate upon completion.

If you opt to study for two semesters, you’ll dig deeper into the subject area, be eligible to apply for an internship and Optional Practical Training (OPT). When you add electives to explore complimentary or enhancing subject areas, you will receive a diploma for completing a Professional Diploma Program in Project and Agile Management and have opportunities for internships and OPT.

At UC Berkeley Extension, short-term program subjects vary, but each discipline leaves a lasting impact on your résumé.

So, if you’d prefer an immersive in finance, an advanced immersive in project management or a full diploma in data science, the choice is yours.

“I am very fortunate to work with the many students who apply to our programs. The transformation I see in them after participating in a short academic program is amazing!” Enrollment Adviser Thelma Howland notes.

Internship opportunities

Did you know that if you successfully complete an Immersive or Advanced Immersive – or both – then you can start working through a three-month internship at a leading San Francisco or Silicon Valley company?

The perfect opportunity to put your newfound skills to work, gain work experience and expand your professional network, internships allow you to see first-hand how a U.S. business runs, giving you a competitive edge when you’re ready to land a full-time position in your desired field.

“I worked at Gracenote as a Product Management Intern in the automotive division. One of my biggest projects was to expand radio station format mapping, working closely with the Head of Content Architecture and Discovery. I also had the opportunity to take a deep dive into Agile methodology with the software engineering team,” marketing graduate Maria Paula exclaims.

Optional Practical Training (OPT)

F-1 international students who have been full-time students for at least two consecutive semesters at UC Berkeley Extension and plan to seek employment in the United States in their fields of study are eligible to apply for paid temporary work authorization in the United States, also known as Optional Practical Training (OPT).

From managing schedules, costs and project scope for the launch of a new app to ensuring communication and quality management for a new website project, OPT allows you to apply everything you’ve learned from your subject areas to real-world projects.
